Like what the title suggests, it's time for another crazy semester. Frankly speaking, I am neither academically nor psychological prepared for the term ahead (I just bought my first textbook today!):/

I am still figuring out why I am posting about my personal life, since this blog is intended for me to post my views on financial issues. Maybe I just yearn for an outlet to relieve stress and say what I really feel, even though I am doing so on a computer and not telling any one in particular?

Looking back, my last semester witnessed many ups and downs.

Bizcom
After comtemplating for the longest time ever, I had decided to run for Bizcom President. I could say this decision was largely made against my will as I had previously intended to run for Univantage director instead. Considering the fact that many of my starring family members (Nicholas, Joshua, etc...) might not be able to obtain exco positions if I were to opt for the latter, I bit the bullet. Another factor was the sacrifice made by Kelly who withdrew from the ACF elections, in short many difficult decisions were made and I never felt so uncertain about the future before. It was indeed a leap of faith. Through this experience, the word 'faith' has another dimension to its meaning. Faith means to act with complete devotion even when you are unsure of the outcome. This is markedly different from academics, where one should be able to do reasonably well as long as he or she makes the effort. Nevertheless, I am immensely proud of my exco and it is my firm belief that we can accomplish many amazing achievements together as a team.

GPA
One word to sum it up - FALL. I fell, and the fall was downright painful. Year 1 was average, but Year 2 sem 1 was absolutely horrible. I never expected myself to fare so badly, my mental state was in a terrible mess during the exam week and I somehow managed to prepare myself for the bad news when I checked my grades after coming back from OCSP. Like what she said, I failed to compartmentalize my emotions and realign my focus. As much as I like to believe how logical I am as a person, it came to my realization that my heart was pulling the strings all this while. Let's hope I am able to find my drive and energy back this sem and fulfil my duty as a student.

OCSP
The days in Chiang Mai left a deep impression on me. Other than making me feel how lucky I am, the OCSP has taught me the value of service and has allowed me to meet a group of really fantastic and awesome people. It warms my heart to know how everyone took care of one another, especially when I was down with food poisioning:) Really wish that we can keep in touch with each other despite how busy everyone is going to be!

River Valley Primary School
To the members of RVPS 'Dead Buddies' Society (Vincent Chan, Brandon and Enrico), thank you for the 15 years of brotherhood! Although you guys always jio me go drink or club whenever we meet, I would glady do so because it's fun to hang out with you guys:) It strikes me as a miracle how we can maintain contact throughout all these years, and I will pray for this miracle to continue.

Catholic High School
To the members of Let's Get (CAT) High! (Vincent Lim, Xing Zhi and Daniel), thank for you for the 8 years of friendship! It was nice playing all the pranks and cracking all the jokes one could possibly imagine in class during our secondary school days:P And the funny stories about your or other people's encounters with SN girls lol! The trip to JB with Vincent was quite an eye-opener for me haha..

SMU
Starring family (too many to list) is simply love, it's difficult to imagine how we actually stay so close together since Year 1 Sem 1, weathering both rain and shine together. My SMU experience is totally worth it because of all your presence. There's really no way to count many how times have we gone out for outings or celebrated festivals together (including Nick's smses:P). It's hard not to laugh when jokers like Michelle and Marvin are around. It's hard not to feel secure when reliable dudes like Wei Ji and Darryl are around. As for Nicholas, I see him almost everyday. Shifu always surprises us with his profound knowledge of the opposite sex. Michael is kind and generous, Lynnette and Jane our mothers who brought us into Bizcom. Joshua never fails to disturb me through emails and facebook, but is always there when I need a listening ear. Sharon can persuade almost anyone with her whiny voice, Ruth is the talented Miss Bondue who can play the violin, Kelly the 'school team player' for volleyball and Celine the ultra nice and helpful girl. Last but not least, Uncle Ashley who always MIA (but improving already la hahaha:)

Though the road ahead is tough, but every time these people appear in my mind I can always find the strength I need to overcome all barriers. Now that I have this heavy responsibilty on my shoulders, it is my duty to commit my best and repay the faith that all these people (Bizcom in particular) have in me. Learning that there are many important issues beyond my control, I am still grateful for the things which happened. Hence let's live this year as if it was my last, without leaving any regrets.

I still subscribe to the philosophy of faith.

The Duty Fulfiller
As an ISTJ, your primary mode of living is focused internally, where you take things in via your five senses in a literal, concrete fashion. Your secondary mode is external, where you deal with things rationally and logically.
ISTJs are quiet and reserved individuals who are interested in security and peaceful living. They have a strongly-felt internal sense of duty, which lends them a serious air and the motivation to follow through on tasks. Organized and methodical in their approach, they can generally succeed at any task which they undertake.

ISTJs are very loyal, faithful, and dependable. They place great importance on honesty and integrity. They are "good citizens" who can be depended on to do the right thing for their families and communities. While they generally take things very seriously, they also usually have an offbeat sense of humor and can be a lot of fun - especially at family or work-related gatherings.

ISTJs tend to believe in laws and traditions, and expect the same from others. They're not comfortable with breaking laws or going against the rules. If they are able to see a good reason for stepping outside of the established mode of doing things, the ISTJ will support that effort. However, ISTJs more often tend to believe that things should be done according to procedures and plans. If an ISTJ has not developed their Intuitive side sufficiently, they may become overly obsessed with structure, and insist on doing everything "by the book".

The ISTJ is extremely dependable on following through with things which he or she has promised. For this reason, they sometimes get more and more work piled on them. Because the ISTJ has such a strong sense of duty, they may have a difficult time saying "no" when they are given more work than they can reasonably handle. For this reason, the ISTJ often works long hours, and may be unwittingly taken advantage of.

The ISTJ will work for long periods of time and put tremendous amounts of energy into doing any task which they see as important to fulfilling a goal. However, they will resist putting energy into things which don't make sense to them, or for which they can't see a practical application. They prefer to work alone, but work well in teams when the situation demands it. They like to be accountable for their actions, and enjoy being in positions of authority. The ISTJ has little use for theory or abstract thinking, unless the practical application is clear.

ISTJs have tremendous respect for facts. They hold a tremendous store of facts within themselves, which they have gathered through their Sensing preference. They may have difficulty understanding a theory or idea which is different from their own perspective. However, if they are shown the importance or relevance of the idea to someone who they respect or care about, the idea becomes a fact, which the ISTJ will internalize and support. Once the ISTJ supports a cause or idea, he or she will stop at no lengths to ensure that they are doing their duty of giving support where support is needed.

The ISTJ is not naturally in tune with their own feelings and the feelings of others. They may have difficulty picking up on emotional needs immediately, as they are presented. Being perfectionists themselves, they have a tendency to take other people's efforts for granted, like they take their own efforts for granted. They need to remember to pat people on the back once in a while.

ISTJs are likely to be uncomfortable expressing affection and emotion to others. However, their strong sense of duty and the ability to see what needs to be done in any situation usually allows them to overcome their natural reservations, and they are usually quite supporting and caring individuals with the people that they love. Once the ISTJ realizes the emotional needs of those who are close to them, they put forth effort to meet those needs.

The ISTJ is extremely faithful and loyal. Traditional and family-minded, they will put forth great amounts of effort at making their homes and families running smoothly. They are responsible parents, taking their parenting roles seriously. They are usually good and generous providers to their families. They care deeply about those close to them, although they usually are not comfortable with expressing their love. The ISTJ is likely to express their affection through actions, rather than through words.

ISTJs have an excellent ability to take any task and define it, organize it, plan it, and implement it through to completion. They are very hard workers, who do not allow obstacles to get in the way of performing their duties. They do not usually give themselves enough credit for their achievements, seeing their accomplishments simply as the natural fulfillment of their obligations.

ISTJs usually have a great sense of space and function, and artistic appreciation. Their homes are likely to be tastefully furnished and immaculately maintained. They are acutely aware of their senses, and want to be in surroundings which fit their need for structure, order, and beauty.

Under stress, ISTJs may fall into "catastrophe mode", where they see nothing but all of the possibilities of what could go wrong. They will berate themselves for things which they should have done differently, or duties which they failed to perform. They will lose their ability to see things calmly and reasonably, and will depress themselves with their visions of doom.

In general, the ISTJ has a tremendous amount of potential. Capable, logical, reasonable, and effective individuals with a deeply driven desire to promote security and peaceful living, the ISTJ has what it takes to be highly effective at achieving their chosen goals - whatever they may be.

ISTJ Relationships
The ISTJ's word is as good as gold, and they honor their commitments faithfully. They believe that to do otherwise would be nothing less than a breach of honor and trustworthiness. Consequently, they take their vows very seriously, and once they have said "I do", that means they are bound to the relationship until "death do us apart" or otherwise. ISTJs are driven to fulfill their responsibilities and duties, and will do so with tireless effort. They will do their best to meet the obligations presented by the different relationship roles which they play during their lives, i.e. spouse, parent, offspring, etc. They may have difficulty showing warmth, but they frequently feel it in abundance, and most develop the ability to show it through sheer effort. If nothing else, the ISTJ holds the gold medal of all the personality types for Effort. They will put forth tremendous amounts of effort to accomplish goals which are important to them. If healthy relationships are among these goals, you can bet that the ISTJ will do everything that they can to foster and maintain healthy relationships.

ISTJs as Lovers

ISTJs are committed, loyal partners, who will put forth tremendous amounts of effort into making their relationships work. Once they have made a commitment to a relationship, they will stick with it until the end. They gladly accept their duty towards fulfilling their role in the relationship. ISTJs are generally willing and able to do anything which they have defined as a goal. So, if maintaining a good relationship is important to the ISTJ, they are likely to have a good relationship. If they have not added this goal to their internal "list" of duties, they are likely to approach the relationship in their "natural" state, which is extremely practical, traditional, and structured.
Sexually, the ISTJ is likely to approach intimacy from a physical perspective, rather than as a means of expressing love and affection. They usually have a problem expressing their deepest feelings, even though they may be very strongly felt. They will expect sex on a relatively scheduled basis, and are likely to honor traditions regarding gender role-playing. Male ISTJs will assert their perspective on their partners, while female ISTJs will tend to follow along with what their male counterparts want (although they will be uncomfortable with anything extremely out of the traditional norm).

ISTJs do not feel threatened by constructive criticism or conflict situations. When faced with criticism, the ISTJ is likely to believe that their point of view is correct. They have a tremendous amount of respect for Facts, and base their opinions on known facts and logic. Consequently, they have a hard time seeing the viability of viewpoints which don't match their own. When the ISTJ gets involved in a disagreement over a point, they usually begin to attempt to recruit the other person over to their own point of view, fully believing that they are right, and that the other individual simply needs to understand the facts of the situation. In such situations, the ISTJ may or may not be right, but their confidence in their own "rightness" can shake the confidence of others involved. This habit can quickly turn conversations into "win-lose" situations, and can present a special problem in intimate relationships.

While they may inadvertantly shake the confidence of their colleagues with their "I'm right" approach, the same behavior may cause serious issues within their intimate relationships. The ISTJ's constant assertion of "rightness" may send a message to their mates that they do not value their opinions. If the ISTJ has a mate with a strong Feeling preference, they may inadvertantly wreak havoc with their self-esteem, since Feeling individuals are extremely sensitive to conflict and criticism, and are especially vulnerable in their intimate relationships.

Since ISTJs make decisions using the Thinking function (rather than Feeling), they are not naturally likely to consider their mates feelings and emotions in daily living. This may be a problem if their mates have the Feeling preference, since Feeling individuals usually expect a lot of positive affirmation, which the ISTJ does not naturally communicate to them. The ISTJ needs to remember that others may need to hear that they are loved and valued, even if the ISTJ doesn't need to hear this themself.

ISTJs are generally very capable and efficient at most things which they endeavor. Consequently, their mates are likely to hold a good amount of respect for them. Daily concerns are likely to be well-provided for by the ISTJ. If other concerns, such as emotional needs, are pointed out to the ISTJ as important issues for their mates, the ISTJ will rise to the occasion and add the task of addressing these needs to the internal "list" of duties. Since the ISTJ is so willing to work hard at issues, and so tireless at performing tasks which they feel should be done, the ISTJ generally makes a wonderful, caring mate who is willing and able to promote a healthy, lasting relationship which is also a partnership.

Although two well-developed individuals of any type can enjoy a healthy relationship, the ISTJ's natural partner is the ESFP, or the ESTP. ISTJ's dominant function of Introverted Sensing is best matched with a partner whose personality is dominated by Extraverted Sensing. How did we arrive at this?

ISTJs as Parents

ISTJs are faithful and devoted parents who can be counted on to put forth their very best efforts towards raising their children in positive, comfortable, secure homes, and to promote their growth in such a way that they will become secure adults who know their place in life within our society. Such is the greatest goal of an ISTJ parent toward their child.

Along the path towards this goal, the ISTJ expects that their children honor their traditional familial roles. As parents, they demand respect and authority from their children. They willingly accept their parental role of provider and guardian. Once the ISTJ becomes a parent, it becomes a "given" that they will perform all of the duties associated with parenthood, and they will do so without grudge or burden. However, they expect that their children give them their due respect in return, and will have little patience with disrespectful behavior.

When it comes to giving punishment or discipline, the ISTJ will be able to do so when necessary without too much internal trauma. They see it as their duty to teach their children when they've done wrong, and so will administer the punishment in the name of the greater cause of doing their duty towards their children. Not to imply that the ISTJ will enjoy disciplining their children, they simply will put their duties before their personal feelings.

The ISTJ is likely to have a problem giving a lot of positive affirmation and support to their children. Having very high expectations for their own behavior and the behavior of others, the ISTJ often forgets to give praise when praise is due. All children need positive support as they find their place in the world, and this is especially true for children with the Feeling preference, who benefit tremendously from positive affirmation, and suffer (sometimes tremendously) in its void. The ISTJ who recognizes sensitivity in their child should take special care to give them positive support and affirmation.

The ISTJ will create a consistent, secure environment for their children, with definite roles and boundaries. Although this may at times create division between the parent and child (especially during rebellious adolescence), it will generally promote the child's growth into a secure adult. ISTJ parents will be remembered and honored by their children for being good people who always tried their best, and for putting the needs of their children above their own.

ISTJs as Friends
Although friendships do not rank highest in the ISTJ's list of important relationships (whose duties and obligation to the Family rank above all else), they do have value these relationships and put effort into enhancing and maintaining them. The ISTJ is likely to choose to be around people who have similar interests and perspectives to their own, and are likely to not have much patience with people who are very different from themselves.

Although their usual mode of being is very serious-minded, ISTJs like to have fun and let loose. They like being with Extraverts who are optimistic and fun-minded, although the E's enthusiasm may eventually get on the ISTJ's nerves. ISTJs can get along with most other types, but they especially form solid connections with other Sensing Judgers. The ISTJ's respect for laws and traditions may make them unable to relate well to Sensing Perceiving types, although they admire their carefree ability to live for the moment. And conversely, the Sensing Perceiving types may see the ISTJ's need for structure as too conservative or scheduled for their tastes. ISTJs seem to get along well with Intuitives, although they cannot really relate to some of the Intuitives perspectives.

Review for 2010

Conducting a review of my virtual portfolio for 2010, I concluded that the annualized return of 28.3% is merely satisfactory and largely based on the bullish market sentiments. Although most investment professionals fail to outperform the benchmark Straits Times Index, beating the market by 18.2% is only marginally better, considering it is only a year's record. Successful application of sound investment principles should enable the investor to consistently outpace the market for the long term.

In the words of Warren Buffett, "We will now settle for one good idea a year." Since the beginning of 2009, I find it increasingly difficult to seek out bargains in the Singapore stockmarket. Fortunately, I have had the luck to conceive an idea each in 2009 and 2010 respectively, but these ideas came after much patience and research. I feel more comfortable with the underlying business than their stock prices... In the market, you don't get paid for activity (brokers do), you get rewarded for being right. And being right or wrong does not depend on the number of people who share the same view as you, the outcome relies on the amount of intellect and type of temperament you bring to evaluating selected business within your circle of competence.

If you are planning to buy stocks in the next few years, it is simply insane to hope for a rising stockmarket. Yet today's newspapers joyfully claimed that the total market capitalisation of companies listed on the Singapore Exchange has jumped 22.7% in 2010. Remember that in investing, pessimism is your pal and euphoria the enemy. I only attempt to be fearful when the other are greedy and greedy when the others are fearful. Right now, optimism prevails: Who wouldn't like the STI at grow at 10% annually? According to the rule of 72, you can double your principal by earning a 10% return for approximately 7.2 years. Investors pay a costly price for a cheery consensus.

It's getting kind of boring to focus only on stock investing: Sitting down and reading annual reports only to discover fairly or overpriced businesses is not my idea of fun. School is starting soon, at least it will keep me distracted from the markets and prevent me from making some capital allocation mistakes.

The Intelligent Investor

The Intelligent Investor is an investment classic authored by Benjamin Graham, affectionately known as the Dean of Wall Street to many investors. To quote Adam Smith's Money Game,"The reason that Graham is the undisputed dean is that before him there was no profession and after him they began to call it that." Graham founded security analysis as a discipline and laid out several key investment principles which remain hugely relevant even till today.

Warren Buffett, the Oracle of Omaha, endorsed the invesment classic by declaring "I read the first edition of this book early in 1950, when I was nineteen. I thought then it was by far the best book about investing ever written. I still think it is."

Similarly, I read the latest edition of this book in 2008 when I was nineteen and also thought that it was by far the best book about investing ever written. Unfortunately, the similarities end here, for I do not possess the intellectual prowess of Warren Buffett to comprehend the theories completely and neither have I read even a fraction of the number of investment books which he voraciously devoured over the years.

My objectives of writing this post (and subsequent posts) are twofold:

First, to distill the key elements of investing from this classic and

Second, to reinforce my understanding of the topics covered

Chapter 1

Investment vs Speculation: Results to Be Expected by the Intelligent Investor

1) An investment operation is one which, upon thorough analysis promises safety of principal and an adequate return.

2) The distinction between investment and speculation in common stocks has always been a useful one.

3) Risks are inseparable from the opportunities of profits they offer, and both of which must be allowed for in the investor's calculations.

4) Classification of two types of investors: Defensive and Aggressive

Comments

Why did Graham define investment as a form of operation? It is unsound to think of investing as purchasing shares of a single company, we must acknowledge the high degree of risk involved in holding just one stock. As the old adage goes, "Never put all your eggs in one basket." Adequate, rather than extreme diversification is essential to obtaining a favourable result. In addition, investing is not necessarily restricted to the purchase or sale of equities, there are many different forms of investment in the corporate universe, such as bonds, convertibles, real estate, forex, options and derivatives, etc.

Thorough analysis means the detailed evaluation of the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the prospective investment, with the aim to derive an estimation of the intrinsic value expressed in terms of a range of values, which is to be compared with the market price in formulating the appropriate course of action. It entails the careful scrutiny of annual reports released by the company and conducting elaborate analysis of industry outlook and managerial quality.

Safety of principal refers to the investor being reasonably confident that a substantial part of his principal is adequately protected under normal conditions and even when business climate takes a change for the worse. An example will be ensuring that the company can meet its interest requirements for extended periods of time to award its securities investment merit.

Adequate return depends on the type of investor you are instead of the degree of risk you are willing to run. Conventional wisdom states that risk and return are positively correlated, one must be willing to bear a higher level of risk in order to achieve a higher return on investment. On the contrary, Graham proposed that return is determined by the amount of intelligent effort that the investor is able and willing to devote in his investment endeavor.

First, Graham states that the investor should attain a sharp understanding of the differences between investment and speculation. There is nothing wrong with speculation, just that an overwhelming majority of speculators ended up with huge investment losses and terrible economic fates.

Investing does not guarantee that one can accumulate huge amounts of wealth, as reflected in what Graham wrote: There are no sure and easy paths to riches on Wall Street or anywhere else. What matters is the investor know what he is doing, and do the right thing. Risk and return coexist, while we must acknowledge the truth that it is impossible to eliminate ALL risks involved in an investment, it is within the investor's ability to minimise the risk level to maximise the potential return on investment.

Warren Buffett captures the essence by saying, "Risk comes from not knowing what you are doing." Incidentally we analysed the DBS High Notes 5 case study in my Business, Government and Society (BGS) course and came to the conclusion that not knowing the commitments and terms of DBS High Notes led to the purchase of unsound securities by retail investors at unattractive terms.

Does this imply that investors who lack the required knowledge are doomed to suffer neverending losses from their stockmarket participation? Fortunately for the vast majority, the answer is a firm NO. Investors who lack the qualities for successful investing should elect to play the role of a defensive investor. In this case, the defensive investor will opt for extreme diversification by periodically investing a fixed amount of money in an index fund with very low expenses.

This strategy is known as Dollar Cost Averaging, which enables the defensive investor to take advantage of market fluctuations by acquiring more shares when the price is low and vice versa, resulting in a satisfactory average price for his holdings. On the other hand, it is much more difficult to operate as an aggressive investor and I shall elaborate this concept in greater detail in my next post.

Term 1 commences on 16th August, thus I am unsure if I can still monitor the markets and post monthly updates. Nevertheless, I will do my best to continue this effort, after all, the virtual portfolio is the application of the investment theories which I have learnt on my own during the 2 years of army.
Looking back, just realised I have included transaction costs but forgotten to factor in dividends!!! Here goes an extra few percentage points, will calculate them when I am free.

The update for the month of June was a tad late, due to my involvement in the SMU Freshmen Team Building (FTB) Camp. Imagine not checking the quotations of my securities holdings on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) website and conducting any analysis on company fundamentals for three days straight. Even though the Oracle of Omaha, Warren E. Buffett, "wouldn't mind if markets are closed for years", keeping track of the movement in stock prices can actually inculcate a nonchalant attitude towards stockmarket fluctuations.

After the longish introduction, I hereby present the update for June:

This is my first underperforming month after beating the Straits Times Index (STI) consecutively for five months. As I am adopting a long-term business outlook for my portfolio holdings, there isn't really a cause for concern, unless the situation persists over a longer period of time. Meanwhile, it would be more rational and sensible to observe the recent market decline and if possible add to my holdings at more advantageous prices.

Commentary on 'Warren Buffett' Post

My friend, Diana Goh Chern, has posted an e-mail writeup she received on Warren Buffett and I would like to add a few points so as to bring the message across in a clearer manner. Consumerism seems to be the order of day, especially among the increasingly affluent younger generation. Some people appear to have a special affinity for luxury goods, and while a healthy dose of consumption benefits the general economy through stimulating demand, excessive spending has its own pitfalls. Like what we all have studied in Economics, a government which runs budget deficits consistently may find itself faced with staggering amounts of long term debt that can threaten the workings of the economy (take Greece for example). Likewise for individuals, practicing fiscal prudence is the key to financial sustainability. Without any further delay, let us move on to her post.

1. He bought his first share at the age of 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!Things were very cheap that time, encourage your children to invest

The stock he bought was Cities Service Preferred, which plummeted shortly after he bought it. Nevertheless, he did not let the temporary plunge affect him and held on the stock before liquidating it for a small profit after the price rebounded. After which the stock rose to multiples of its original purchase price. Warren Buffett first learnt about patience from this experience. In addition, he bought the stock with his own money and his sister's, hence he had instilled a strong aversion to loss and sense of responsibility in taking care of other people's money.

2. He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers. One could have bought many things with little savings.
Encourage your children to start some kind of business

Warren Buffett was involved in other small businesses as well, which included pinball machines in barber shops (Wilson Coin Operated Company), collecting unwanted golf balls from golf courses and selling them for a small profit. His favourite book was '1,000 ways to make 1,000', which refers to making a million dollars. He pledged to become a millionaire by the age of 34 as well or he would jump down the tallest building in Omaha, where he lives in (he was one way before he reached 34).

3. He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha that he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence. Don't buy more than what you really need and encourage your children to do and think the same.

His house looks like what a typical middle class family would stay in. The only addition was a racquet court, a spending which was insignificant compared to his wealth. He loves making money, and not hoarding wealth and hence he did not see any need to erect a wall or fence around his house. Interestingly, his lifestyle remains very much the same over the years, preferring to drink Cherry Coke and eat at McDonalds - not what you will expect from someone of extraordinary wealth. (Though not a very healthy diet haha)

4. He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him. You are what you are.

He's brutally honest with his identity, even saying 'I buy expensive suits, they just look cheap on me.'

5. He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company. Always think how you can accomplish things economically.

Buffett also abhors corporate CEOs who enjoy special privileges at the expense of the shareholders by flying first-class and indulging in other excesses. Thus he named his private jet 'The Indefensible' after he bought it, expecting criticisms from naysayers.

6. His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis.Assign the right people to the right jobs.

Berkshire Hathaway is the only US public listed company which trades for over $100,000 a share, and the annual Berkshire shareholders meeting is dubbed as the 'Woodstock of Capitalism' where numerous investors flock to Omaha every year to listen to Buffett's (together with his Vice-Chairman Charlie Munger) teeming wisdom and quirky humour.
He actively seeks for managers who are honest, competent and shareholder-oriented.

7. He has given his CEOs only two rules. Rule 1, do not lose any of your shareholders' money. Rule 2 remember rule number 1.Set goals and make sure people focus on them.

Buffett has a deep sense of trust in his managers to do what's best for the company and gives them free rein in daily operations so that they can concentrate on running the company successfully, free from distractions. The managers align their interests with the shareholders' by having a substantial amount of their net worth in the company. Buffett himself has 99% of his net worth in Berkshire.
‘We eat our own cooking’

8. He does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time after he gets home is to make himself some popcorn and watch television. Warren Buffet does not carry a cell phone, nor has a computer on his desk.Don't try to show off, just be yourself and do what you enjoy doing.

A famous technophobe, Buffett avoids investing in high tech companies simply because he feels that they are not within his circle of competence. What matters in investing is realistically defining what you don't know, rather than what you know. By following this principle he managed to avoid the Dot Com Bubble of the late 1990s and the resulting crash. Observing that he does not use computer or fanciful economic equations to analyze stocks, one should wonder the utility of the complex financial theories taught at Business schools today, especially Efficient Market Hypothesis.
'If markets are always efficient, I would be a bum on the street holding a tin cup.'

9. Bill Gates, the world's richest man met him for the first time only 5 years ago. Bill gates did not think he had anything in common with Warren Buffet. So he had scheduled his meeting for only half an hour. But when Gates met him, the meeting lasted for ten hours and Bill Gates became a devotee of Warren Buffet.

Gates is also well-known for his frugality and generosity, hence Buffett donated a staggering amount of his wealth to the Gates Foundation to serve worthy causes. The two men have many in common than most people thought. Despite Bill Gates the man himself explaining about computers and the Internet to Warren Buffett, the latter still stuck to his investment knitting. Warren later remarked that he would only be successful in the investment arena, whereas Gates can achieve similar success in virtually any field he chooses to embark on.
That's the former No.1 and No.2 world’s richest men for you.

In conclusion, Buffett loves his life simply because he is doing what he loves, which is allocating capital and establishing meaningful working relationships with his corporate managers.
‘I feel like tap dancing to work everyday.’

How many of us can face work with such a cheerful attitude everyday? We must discover what we truly love to do, work hard towards the goal and like Goh Chern said, appreciate the opportunity given and meanwhile enjoy the process. Buffett is a great role model, and I have learned much from him. I sincerely hope others can do so as well.

Although the virtual portfolio has outperformed the market average for four consecutive months, it it still too short a period to warrant any reliable conclusion with regards to the soundness of the common stock selection principles practised here. Nevertheless, sound principles have consistently produced generally sound results and hence the intelligent investor must assume that they will continue to do so.

In order to apply the security analysis techniques which I have learnt, I have decided to construct a virtual portfolio on 31 Dec 09 and observe how my picks fare in 2010 and beyond. As I was unable to find a website which offers a virtual trading account for the Singapore Exchange, I suppose I will track my own performance using price quotes from the SGX website. The details are shown below:

E-Prep Course

I have already started on my E-Prep course conducted by Nanyang Technological University on Business Finance and made some progress:
Chapter 1 - An Overview of Financial Management (Completed)
Chapter 2 - Time Value of Money (Completed)
Chapter 3 - Financial Statements, Cash Flow and Taxes
Chapter 4 - Analysis of Financial Statements
Chapter 5 - Financial Markets and Institutions
Supposed to finish the module within 3 months and so far 2 weeks have passed, thus it's going at a relatively fast pace:)

Driving

Must obtain my driving licence before August, managed to clear all the theory tests and all that's left is the practical part.

Temporary Job

I must make a decision on which job I am going to take up after my ORD; my priority is to gain relevant experience in Banking & Finance and currently I have four options to choose from. One of them may offer the experience but I will not put my hopes too high and instead opt for the better-paying ones in case if things don't work out as well as I have expected.

Investment Analysis & Portfolio Management

Being a defensive investor, I have allocated a substantial percentage of my net worth in Singapore equities after my analysis has shown that the stock is trading at a discount from it's intrinsic value. In addition, I am psychologically prepared in the event that the market price of my holdings has declined on a temporary basis. One should never be forced to sell. Thinking of branching out into other assets to diversify away the risk after receiving income from the temp job(s).

Youth Investor Stock Challenge

A competition organised by OCBC Securities and SIAS which I have taken part and will commence at mid January. Due to the short time frame, a value approach based on fundamental analysis may produce limited results in the short term and therefore I am 'forced' to pick up some technical analysis tools. Guess I will be looking at more and more charts...

Fitness

It's important to be proactive and maintain a healthy lifestyle after NS, otherwise it's really easy to gain all the weight back in just a few months. Morning run everyday and gym sessions on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Will consider picking up another new sport if time permits, perhaps tennis or golf.

Organisation

It's certainly a positive sign that several of my buddies share similar interests with me, it would be great if we can work together and conduct some insightful research. Besides that each of us can also have our own specialisation - equities, bonds, real estate and options trading. Leveraging on each other's knowledge can definitely achieve synergy:)

I must, and I will achieve all these goals in 2010.

What is financial literacy, and why is it so important? I acknowledge the fact that people address and view this issue differently, however, a low perceived importance regarding financial affairs does not necessarily diminish its influence on our everyday lives. The old paradigm of achieving success has placed a flawed emphasis solely on intelligence quotient and emotional quotient, while these vital elements are indispensible, a new component has emerged - financial quotient.

While attaining excellent grades and studying at a prestigious institution used to provide a ticket to a life of luxury through high earning power, times have changed. The rules of the game have changed, just as how our economy has transformed to what it it today. Playing the new game using an old set of rules produces unthinkable consequences. We must learn to adapt to this changing world, for those who don't will eventually fail and face the fate of elimination.

Conversely, the shrewd few who invest their time and money to master the rules of the game will thrive, grow and prosper for generations to come. It is the survival of the smartest, the ones who are intelligent enough to recognise the effective means to achieve what they want, typically in standard Machiavellian fashion.

Shamefully enough, I have yet to gain a thorough understanding of the ideas expressed in these famous works. Nevertheless, I have already embarked on a financial journey and reached to an end of the NS stage. Results are mixed, but overall there is an improvement in my position and I am thankful of that. No one can predict what will happen in the future, but throughout passage of time we can still reasonably expect that generally sound principles produce sound results, and we must act on the assumption that they will continue to do so.

Asset Allocation

Everything which has a beginning also has an end, this statement can be soundly applied onto my National Service, which started 20 months ago on April 2008 and is coming to a close in Feb next year. Through disciplined saving and prudent spending (though there were occasional self-pampering involved), I find myself in charge of a modest amount of capital to allocate and manage.

Indeed, I have explored a great variety of financial instruments, which can range from the "safe" corporate bonds and governmental obligations to "speculative" options and futures trading. I found many of their concepts and characteristics interesting; but when it comes down to selecting one to build a portfolio the choices are pretty much limited.

Graham's philosophy resonates well with me, and thus I believe the first question one should ask is to elect to be a defensive or aggressive investor. Defensive means freedom from concern, annoyance, the need for making frequent decisions. Conversely, aggressive suggests the willingness and the ability to spend time searching for the ever present bargain opportunities.

Attaining the average result requires a minimum effort, but to achieve superior results, even of a slight magnitude, is much harder than it looks. Due to my limited knowledge and experience, it is probably wise to select the defensive (non-enterprising) path.

As Graham stated, percepts crystallised out of experience may run the risk of not withstanding the test of time. Understanding this inevitable development can well reduce the risk. While sweeping statements or easy generalizations (eg any bond is safer than any stock-try not to tell this to a bondholder full of defaulted bonds) do not retain its validity through the passage of time, the enduring principles are the ones which are closely relation to human nature and behaviour. A leopard never changes its spots. Concepts of behavioural finance such as overconfidence, loss aversion and mental accounting are useful ideas which offer explaination for some of the financial phenomenon we witness today.

Never stop thinking.

Alright since I have received comments that I should update my blog, I shall gladly do so:) As a matter of fact, I don't even think that people actually read my blog. My sincere apologies for blurting out this comment, since I seldom do extraordinary or significant activities. I am worried these mundane events might bore my reader to death. So let's get back to the story, then.

One of the most enjoyable activities one can do in the army is to clear leave, and I shall state some of the things I have done:

1) Signed up for an E-PREP course, namely 'Business Finance' conducted by Nanyang Technological University. Well since I am going to study finance or finance related topics at the undergraduate level I guess it's a pretty safe bet to attend an introductory course to get a hang of what Finance's all about.

2) Registered myself as a student member of Securities Investor Association of Singapore (SIAS) as soon as I have collected my SMU student card (I matriculated just a couple of weeks ago). The logic behind this move driven by the need to attain more sophisticated financial statement analysis methods, my current superficial knowledge of accounting is very much limited; and to tear the annual reports of various companies apart I will need to acquire more information and practice more.

3) Last but not least, create a trading account at Central Depository Pte Ltd and most probably with PhilipCapital as my online brokerage. When I look back at that time when I just enlisted in the army, I was just a regular young kid with no serious goals or ambition. The thoughts of pursuing my interests and cultivating my passion didn't really cross my mind yet until after NJC. Perhaps all the studying there kind of buried my desire to achieve what I want.

"I don't know, maybe business?"

And I am referring to this blog. Too busy with work lately, but can't really elaborate here in order to prevent necessary trouble. Kinda felt that the previous blogskin was kind of dark and gloomy, even though there's Jay and Hebe in it. So I switched to this blogskin which is more light and cheery haha:)

Really didn't get to spend much time with my family and friends during the past few months, must really make it up to them when time permits me to do so. Anyway just don't expect me to blog every now and then, though you may have grown accustomed to it. Sometimes guys serving their obligation (notice that I try to avoid any related terms) really get cropped up in their work so much that they don't even have time for themselves.

Looking forward to the time when I regain my freedom and can accomplish what I really desire.

Got to know two SMU undergraduates taking double degree (Accountancy and Business) during their ICT and they recommended me to join them in SMIF (Student-Managed Investment Fund!;) Went to conduct some research and discovered the following information:

Can you believe it? I have to burn a weekend to study for my Combat Intelligence Test. I think people in the intelligence vocation tend to age the fastest, considering the amount of thinking and analysis that must be done before the commencement of any operation. Still, I kind of... enjoy it.

Its because the outcome of a battle is decided even before a single shot is being fired.

But seriously mugging is really not my cup of tea. I know some people think that being able to mug is extremely important in the sense that it allows them to get the fantastic grades and serve as a stepping stone towards earning big heaps of cash or the social status of being an elite scholar. More often than not, they also like to associate themselves with people of the same breed to feel that they are "a cut above the rest".

I only pray that they can leave me alone because the very thought of these empty pursuits disgusts me to the core. I believe being ordinary is also a form of happiness.

And after some thinking, I would like to share some of the possible ways to protect yourself in every week

Week 1
Birds of the same feather flock together, so try to attain reasonably good GPA to secure decent project mates (best if they are your friends to begin with)

Week 2
When this particularly irritating fellow is going to contribute non-constructive comments theres bound to be inherent flaws in his/her argument so shoot it down asap before any serious damage is dealt

Week 3
Sell instead of buy assignment answers and mock at the joker who just bought the wrong set of answers from you;p

Week 4
If someone spreads rumours about a person, say, A in front of B, B is getting the idea that he/she will do the similar thing in B's absence and be wary of him/her instead
Then can gang up with the "victims" and payback the liar during peer evaluation

Week 5
Dun be at the pub in the first place, prevention is better than cure

Week 6
Only stupid profs will be deceived by these petty tactics and probably can distinguish those who are genuine and those who are trying to suck up

Week 7
From a business/investing perspective, why believe your competitor is willing to share valuable tips with you for free? If you are not so intelligent enough to trust him/her then suffer the consquences of your naiveté

Week 8
Disappearing from projects or meetings will only result in a thumbs-down for peer evaluation, enough said

Sucking up to people who are not close to you is a pretty obvious endeavor

Sabo a group's presentation, and every group will sabo yours, being sabo by one or everyone is worse?

Have a backup copy of your notes or guard your notes carefully shall do

Telling people that you are at Zouk over the phone when in fact you are in the library/studyroom immediately gives the game away, assuming the other party is alert enough and of reasonable intelligence

Come on the profs have got something better to do, besides its pointless to do all these if the fellow isn't providing the drinks and cigarettes

He/she can claim to possess the same level of IQ as Forrest Gump but GPA doesn't lie

In conclusion, I really wonder if the schemer who practises all these "strategies" can actually find the time and energy to study, inevitably he/she may be the one whos gonna end up with sucky grades

However, it is an undeniable fact there competition is intense there and that kinda makes me feel worried... While certain aspects may be exaggerated, it provides a warning regarding the intensity level of competition in the university. It also gives the student a taste of the workings of the corporate world, where the dog-eat-dog principle is the rule and not the exception. Still, I must applause the video for its high entertainment value. Well done!

Well, I have met one.

We actually spent the bulk of the afternoon discussing about Warren Buffett, whether to go long or short on bonds and the effect of macroeconomic trends on the market. Law undergraduates typically work around the clock to churn out reports for him, he said. To my surprise, he actually asked me if I was willing to assist him with his research:S

Unfortunately, my answer was no due to NS. In addition, I have still got my own research so I can't afford to be distracted now. At least we exchanged numbers and email.

Vincent introduced a new game, Left 4 Dead, to me. Warning: This game is extremely addictive. That's why I shall limit myself to playing only once in two weeks. Never knew killing zombies with your friends can actually be so fun.

Time really passes very quickly. Another batch of junior college students have received their A Level results. And I will blame myself for getting such unsatisfactory results again. Besides that, I am really afraid that the two years of blank will limit my ability to learn. And yet I dun see the rest of my peers acting in the same way as me. Am I being too paranoid?

29! That is way too old already! Luckily I plan not to retire at all (assuming I can build my favourite career)

Some NSF like to complain that they are being neglected by their friends. I beg to differ. I enjoy doing things I like on my own too. I visited the Career and Education Fair today. As usual, people were giving me, this young little NSF, strange looks when I asked them about careers and stuff like that. Some were very helpful, taking lots of time to explain the details of the insurance, banking and finance industries to this young man.

Finally I understood what Philip Fisher meant by "scuttlebutt".

For the first time in my NS life, I am seriously thankful for my appointment as an intelligence specialist. Being involved in the conducting of reservist training allows me to meet a variety of vastly different people, but this particular battalion stands out exceptionally. I have had the rare opportunity to interact with investment bankers, especially one who is the vice president of a company (not much detail about him will be revealed in order to safeguard his identity) in Singapore.

I was working when I heard them discussing about the general economy situation and business climate. Without much hesitation I joined in and unknowingly we chatted for a couple of hours on topics covering banks, insurance and investment. We talked about George Soros and Peter Lynch. His unusual insights provided a most refreshing perspective on several financial issues. I have to admit it was rather intellectually challenging but satisfying to engage in a conversation with him. I was flabbergasted when part of my understanding on these matters was labelled as "most basic"! He later explained several concepts of finance to point out the flaw in my argument. But it was what he commented that made my day.

"You are not bad for someone of your age."

I beamed. But I know I still have a long way to go, and I shall never stop. Perhaps my starting point can possibly be an internship at his company after I ORD:)

No, I am not referring to the one for Singapore but more for myself.

In the face of this worsening global financial crisis, I am relieved to assert that there is no need for me to dip into my reserves. Furthermore, my job is recession proof and it is most unlikely that I will ever receive a pay cut in the near future.

Does that mean there is no cause for concern? My answer is a big, flat no. Though employed, it is not very comforting to know that I am seriously underpaid. In addition, transportation costs constitute a large financial burden for me. Even the price of hawker food has been rising despite the fall in fuel costs.

Even so, there are several measures which can be taken to minimize expenditure:

1) Stay in from Monday to Friday

Reduction in transportation costs from $60 to $12

2) Eat cookhouse food

Reduction in food expenses from $180 to $0

3) Outings

Reduction from $80 to $40

However, I cannot expect everyday to be the same and thus there will be some allowance for unexpected events, an amount of $50 will be set aside for such purposes. Any remaining amount will be spent on education through books and seminars.

Net expenditure per month: $52 - $102

The goal here is to contribute 90% of monthly salary into savings as compared to the current government scheme of approximately 20%. The only expenditure will be made on items of

1) absolute necessity, and

2) assets which will appreciate or generate passive income, namely investments in New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or Singapore Exchange (SGX)

Déjà Vu

Fancy blogging during the last hour of the year again... Many things have changed throughout the course of one year. Somehow, I just can't write this entry with the same amount of enthusiasm and level of optimism. Nevertheless, I am still thankful and appreciative of the company of my friends for the most of the day before I book in for my duty.

Watched Yes Man with Adeline, Alvin and Shi Jun in the afternoon; I thought the movie was pretty funny and yet at the same time meaningful. I have to admit that I used to be the old Carl Allen; afraid to accept challenges or embrace changes in my life. Maybe I have improved a little bit already, I don't really know. I think it is supposed to tell us that we should say a resounding "Yes!" when we know it deep inside our heart.

Had dinner with class at a seafood restaurant near Fullerton Hotel during evening. Food was pretty okay, but nothing beats sitting down and having a nice talk with classmates. Crowds were all gathered around Marina Square for a spectacular view of the impending fireworks. Welcome to 2009! Hope everyone will have a smooth sailing year ahead:)

2008 Take-aways

While the term "Take-away" may instill fear in every single undergraduate out there, I am relieved to declare that I am immune to this superstition.

(FYI, "Take-away", aka "Da3 Bao1" in Hokkien is defined as failing a particular module during the course of study and subsquently having to repeat it during the next semester)

Learnt a couple of important lessons in 2008.

1. The importance of time. To think I still had the audacity to waste precious time at the beginning of 2008 prior to my enlistment on unproductive leisure activities; for instance computer games. Really learnt to appreciate time after enlistment. Significance of the phrase "Time is Money" cannot be overemphasized.

2. Ability to recognise genuine friends. These are people who will stick with you even when they are in the army or universities. Frequent meetings are not an absolute necessity, occasional online chats and text messages shall do just fine. Unlike those who have disappeared without a single trace to other "high flier" friends or simply can't be bothered. Nevertheless, I will still treat them as my friends and treasure the relationship we share.

3. Become less gullible. There have been many instances when I am disavdantaged due to my gullibilty and tendency to place trust on dishonest individuals. At some point of time I almost believed in a particular idea of thinking but luckily managed to detect their hypocrisy and see through their lies. As for MLM, its a downright no-no. Trust is hard to earn and easy to lose. I can't agree more with this statement.

3. Develop an immense passion for learning. To tell the truth, I used to loathe studying since I was young. I do not find studying a mind boggling activity but the results I have achieved so far are supposedly to prove my "status" (which I find unnecessary) as the only son of the eldest son (my dad) in my family. Everything went fine until my misfortune in NJC and that compelled me to analyse the severity of the predicament I was pushed into. I straightened out my thinking after surviving this ordeal which left me pernamently scared but fret not; for it only served to strengthen my resolve and deepen my desire.

For you: I still need more time to think it through. Why me? I have nothing but only the ambition and drive to succeed, unlike those who are busy squandering money and wasting time trying to please others...

To me, 2008 was an epiphany. I have found my path. I have lost something I thought to be priceless for something which is truly priceless. I will master, no I MUST master my craft and do whatever it takes to materialise my ambition. Forbes 400, await my future arrival!

The Case Against MLM

The Case Against Multi-Level Marketing (MLM)

As the famous saying goes: There are many roads to Jerusalem. I believe there are equally, if not more approaches to accumulating great wealth too. However, it is simply premature to assume that all methods are completely feasible and desirable. This is a rather feeble attempt to present the case against the widely popular business sales tactic, namely multi-level marketing, also known as pyramid selling. Although the altered version of MLM is legal in the context of the law and regulations pertaining to commercial affairs, its inherent exploitative nature leaves it an undesirable ploy to achieve spectacular sales. An inquiry shall be made in the paragraphs below.

This seemingly profitable business transaction lands the new members (they are NOT classified as investors) into financial jeopardy by leveraging on their optimism on the positive general outlook of the business or industry. IBOs, in short for Independent Business Owner, is merely an artificial term generated by "financial psychologists" to form the illusion that one is a business owner and can receive a substantial passive monthly income without doing any productive work. Productive work here is defined as creating sales by selling products to customers, who are usually friends or relatives of the IBOs. This is what I identify as emotional selling, where the IBO intentionally or unintentionally deploys his or her relationship with another party as a marketing tool to influence him to purchase the overpriced product in order to push sales figures to new heights. Why do I mention overpriced? Direct selling provides convienence to consumers by bringing the product right in front of them but that comes with a cost. The addition of a distributor network pushes up prices due to the inclusion of a third party between the producer and the consumer. Thus, it is not surprising to find the prices of products highly inflated relative to the production costs.

Even so, it is necessary to acknowledge the fact that this marketing and sales system has proven to produce magnificent profits for the firm with its line of products. However, this delusional success has been achieved at the expense of violating business ethics and principles. Philip Fisher wrote a book called "Conservative Investors Sleep Well", while I hope I can write "Ethical Businessmen Snore Loud" sometime in the future haha..

PS: I find it a pity that due to time constraint and mental strain serving in the Army, many arguments are not thoroughly developed and elaborated with valid, compelling examples. This load of crap would have failed as a GP essay, but I think it fits the criteria as an interesting read and a time killer. Anyway there is still SO much for me to learn, any idea how to compress 12 years of academic load into 2 years of personal learning? Accounting, Business and Economics integrated in a 2 year course. How does that sound to you?

Frankly speaking, the subject which I am tackling now is out of my circle of competence. My concern is not how big this circle is, but rather how well I have defined its perimeter. When the people I have spoken to are obsessed with the expected profits and ways to go about spending them in terms of overseas trips and luxurious goods I know we have different goals. We should do what we love to do and every single cent earned should be saved, not spent. I am not going to participate in this venture just for the sake of doing something, as holding on to cash is the default strategy. Furthermore, when the prospective partners are reluctant to share with me the inner workings of the business model including the downside risk especially, I believe they will be less forthcoming in other areas as well. Generally, I do not work with people whom I find it difficult to trust in. Thus there is no need for any cost-benefit analysis. Well, back to my search for opportunities.

Cousin's Wedding

Attended my cousin's wedding on Friday which was held at ShangriLa hotel, Sentosa. Felt so happy for them... In the midst of the dinner a video was played to show the process of my cousin fetching his bride from her house and it was pretty entertaining.. I was touched by his declaration of love, and they simply looked great and blissful with love.. The dinner was nice, and I tried drinking wine again to "get used" to alcohol but to no avail.. My face was totally red and vision became blur right after a glass of red wine=X I am just a guy who can't drink, smoke or gamble haha.. This may sound boring to a great many, but it helped me save a great amount of money haha.. That's in addition to a cut in unnecessary consumer expenditure, which my tiny little economy needs right now:)

Why?

One of the warrant officers said I looked angry and asked why. He should have known why.

Attended a 3 hour seminar conducted by the famous online trader, Conrad Alvin Lim at Adam Khoo Learning Techologies Group yesterday night.

Interestingly, I listened and enjoyed every minute of that 3 hours; unlike my naps during lectures in NJC=X

I also realized that what I have learnt so far is only the TIP OF THE ICEBERG.

However, that does not discourage me from learning EVEN MORE about the art and science of investing. The very thought of acquiring this essential life skill excites me! Like I said, its not about the money, but the fun of earning it purely from NOTHING=P (other than a laptop and a few clicks of the mouse)

It is pretty much obvious that Standard & Poor 500 is still on the downtrend without showing any signs of consolidation, mostly contributed by the negative market sentiment. Even though, the market has yet fallen to its median value as the P.E ratio is still at 24.3x and considered overpriced.

My new learning journey has just started not too long ago. There is simply SO much to learn within the limited time span of 2 years. Hopefully by then I would have mastered the skills required and put them to good use. The age of 21 is such a common age limit for so many things. I used to be obsessed with efficiency but now I am taking a new interest in inefficiency, which is the very reason why others managed to achieve remarkable success.

Anyway, life is SISPEC Headquarters is really not bad. Not that kind which I really like, but guess I will get accustomed to it. Sometimes things dun go my way, but what matters is I learn to accept it and make the most out of it. Life is somehow similar to a game, where you experience ups and downs. Learn to accept the existence of 'bad' turns and it will seem alot less tough. I don't care if people find me childish despite being in the army, cause I live my life the way I want.

I dun really like it when people around me doubt my judgement. It's like, hello, I have probably read more and know more than you do on that particular subject and who do you think you are to tell me on what I should do with my own money. It's not as if I ASKED you how to manage my money in the first place. Likewise there's no need for you to tell me anyway. Bleah.

The definition for 'fear of losing' has changed for me, I realised. In the past way back to my childhood days it meant the fear of failure to achieve what I desired, top scorer in class for instance. The significance of this term changed when I was a teenager, when I interpreted it as the fear of losing something intangible like relationships and memories for example.

Something like losing my friendships just because I am not physically there with my loved ones in universities or my buddies in different army camps. I felt mere mobile communication wasn't enough; or worse still, if there's no mobile contact at all. Maybe having friends isn't such a good idea after all, because I will lose them anyway. The statement "We meet to part" is often very true.

I am still trying to register the idea of a higher being who created us, who loves us for simply being who we are and one who sacrificed for us. It sounds too good to be true. I am wary of believing again, especially when things went horribly wrong, way beyond my comprehension.

Under normal circumstances, people either like to seek pleasure or gain achievements, but one must understand that accomplishment of any of the things above can only bring temporary and not eternal satisfaction.

Singapore celebrates its 43th birthday today!!

As a young and able-bodied male who is currently serving National Service ever since 9th April, I have come to believe that today carries an extra special significance.

Why must I serve? The answer is simple. Because I want Singaporeans to be able to celebrate this day of every year; Sinagpore has come a long way to achieve the success which we enjoy today. And this wouldn't have been possible without an operationally ready force to protect the sovereignty and safeguard the dignity of our nation, our homeland.

During the university admission interview conducted by SMU earlier this year, one of the economics professor asked me if I would cross over to "greener pastures" should the opportunity arises. The other interviewees gave the "standard TYS" answers, citing the positive qualities of Singapore for instance good governance, clean environment and free from natural disasters.

To her question I simply replied, "Wherever I may go can never change the fact that I am from Singapore, and will always remain a Singaporean."

Finally

Finally I can find some time for me to blog.

The previous weeks were the toughest times I experienced in my course so far. Before I continue, I would like to state that Echo company in SISPEC IS NOT SLACK AT ALL. There were countless times when I felt like giving up and wondered why am I here in the very first place. It is most fortunate that my section mates are most supportive and helpful, always showering me with words of encouragement. If it weren't for them, I have no idea how I could have overcome all these obstacles alone. Thanks guys!:)

Truthfully speaking, I was rather disappointed when I didn't make it to OCS when I received my posting order. However, things are different now. As time goes by, I realised that I am actually more suited to become a specialist instead. Interacting with people is one of the things I like to do and being a sergeant allows me to gain more opportunities to communicate and understand my men. This is what I want to and hope I can do. Moreover, to quote my staff sergeant: "Before you start thinking about becoming an officer, think whether you can be a good specialist first."
I agree with him completely.

Six months later, I finally mustered enough courage to read once again what was written on the letter. Only that this time round I managed to gain a deeper understanding of the true intention of the writer. My effort put in thinking through the nights in Pasir Laba camp, Mandai nature reserve and the forests of Pulau Tekong had finally paid off. I can see pieces of information falling nicely together to form a jigsaw puzzle. Alas, I really have no idea if any slightest trace of friendship can still be found in the aftermath of the moment of truth. The most painful emotion a person with pride can feel is shame. In any case, should the worst happen, I hope I will be mentally prepared to accept the consquences and shoulder the responsibilities.

Now that I have cleared the innermost doubt in my mind I can start preparations for achieving my dream:)

The Idealistic Perfectionist

Someone once remarked that I am too idealistic, which I discovered to be genuine after I did some soul searching during the night. I used to be a devout believer, one who put his quiet and yet resilient faith in this world, hoping that truth will always prevail and good will always triumph over evil. Values comprising courage, friendship, love and sincerity are inherent in every single human being or being instilled through daily experience and lessons. Instead, I stumbled upon the bricks of fear, prejudice, hatred and hypocrisy which pile up to form an inpenetrable barrier surrounding my heart.

I have seen people giving in to their fears by adopting passive behaviour;

I have seen people befriending others and expanding influence in order to achieve their own hidden agendas or whatever ulterior motives they might have;

I have seen people mistaking strong emotional dependence and irresponsible flirting through senseless bickering and mindless squabbling for love;

I have seen people pretending to be on friendly terms with one another on the surface while deep down they simply cannot wait to backstab the ones whom they had lunch with;

These logical reasoning brought me to this conclusion:

What I had believed in was nothing more than an illusion.

A life without a direction is like a ship sailing across the vicious waves in the midst of a raging thunderstorm on a dark and stormy night without the guidance of the lighthouse.

That's what I am. Lost. Trapped in the quicksand of time, the more I sacrifice to free myself out of this mess I only find myself sinking deeper into the abyss of darkness.

And where is the hand which is supposed to pull me out of this predicament?

Sometimes I just can't help but realise things can actually happen so quickly as my block leave is drawing to a close in a blink of an eye. Managed to catch a couple of soccer matches for Euro 2008 and I consider myself a fervent support of Portugal. It is a side with remarkable quality and mesmerising style of play. They did pretty well in the group stages to book a date with Germany in the quarter-finals but to my disappointment, they crashed out of the tournament in a match with a score of 2-3 to Germany yesterday. They were down by one goal in the dying minutes and yet they fought on till the very end and I admire them for that. The Germans earned a well deserved victory through their tactical play and should be able to go far in this tournament if they continue to play at this level...

Went for several outings such as cycling with octave at pasir ris, where I taught some of my grand juniors (juniors' juniors) how to cycle and it amazed me that I actually sweat more than my juniors who were learning to ride a bicycleXD Really glad to see that they are still so bonded and this is what makes octave and harmoc so special from the rest. And the usual singing sessions with NS and NJ buddies where I realised a worrying trend in my choice of songs=X Anyway this had been a short but exciting block leave, think NS actually teaches me how to cherish those who are around me, a kind of feeling which I already understand but is further reinforced by army life. Air Force. Above all.

Sounds pretty cool. That's exactly the reason why I signed up for a career in the Air Force as a pilot several weeks ago. Went for computer test and medical review ever since then and to my surprise, I was offered a contract to join the Air Force as a pilot. Very attractive terms and benefits indeed, but I chose to reject it in the end because I do not wish to be tied down by any bonds. My true passion still lies in Economics, where I shall graduate from SMU and carve out a career in Investment Banking:) Thus I can't afford to sign on and I really wonder how I got selected out of 200 over people in the first place=x That's a really hard decision to make, and I am glad I have done it in the end=)

Gonna POP soon!!! Feels great to have completed BMT and overcoming every obstacle ranging from IPPT to SOC, but the most important thing I have gained from my 9 weeks is true friendship and the close bond I share with my section mates:) I really feel that they can be buddies for life cause we can click well haha... What's even better is that we all expressed interest in going to Command School and thus there is a chance that we can still end up together=) Been busy rehearsing for Passing Out Parade lately and standing still under the hot sun can prove to be physically exhausting, but like what I always like to say, it's still mind over matter... I shall execute every drill to the best of my ability so that I deserve the honour of accepting the jockey cap from my parents on the actual day itself.

To my all friends out there: Get ready to address me as Private Tan! (Though I still prefer Officer Cadet Trainee Tan lol)

Defining Limits

I never considered myself a fast runner, my 2.4 km run timing has always stayed above the 11 minute mark. My previous 2.4 km timing during the first IPPT was 11:01, which I thought I have reached my limit already. However, I managed to break my 11 minute barrier by achieving a timing of 9:38 (gold timing being 9:44 and below) and this gave me a great sense of satisfaction:)

There is a lesson to be learnt from this incident, I realised.

I learnt that while there is a limit to the physical strength of an individual, the power of the mind is infinite. There were times I really felt like giving up during the run but my mind simply refused to yield. Maybe my willpower has been honed by the harshness of the environment in NS.

Passing IPPT allows me to qualify for command school and the fact that my entire section passed IPPT brought me even more joy:)

Strange name for a blog entry title, but I dun really feel like thinking of one=X

That's it. I have made the decision. I shall express interest in going to command school. Preferably OCS (Officer Cadet School) but also alright with SISPEC (School of Infantry Specialists) ; where I will become an officer or sergeant upon graduation. Some people choose to aim for command school because of the salary or prestige, however none of these is my main motivation for commandership. My reason is simple. Being a commander allows me to contribute and serve the country to the best of my ability; the very thought of protecting my loved ones gives me the strength to carry on even under extremely difficult conditions. People are always more than ready to take the easy way out: Become men in a slack vocation and "geng" (feign illness) to pass the 2 years. I have nothing against that, it's just that I desire to achieve the best I can in whatever I do:)

Furthermore, I have decided to accept the offer by SMU School of Economics. Wanted to obtain a business degree initially as it will increase my employability but I decided I want to do something I really like. Thinking of getting a MBA in NUS upon graduation before trying for the Big Four or any other famous financial institution in Singapore. Missed the Tea with the Dean session at SMU today due to late book out:( Gotta ask my friend for the details of the session when I book in tomorrow. I can't help but feeling excited to know that there is a possibility we might become classmates in university:)

Oh yeah, the pilot computer test was kind of fun. Certain sections of the test were like arcade games and others required INTENSE levels of concentration and EXTREME levels of multi-tasking skill=X Still gotta go for a pilot medical checkup this coming week and MP selection test. Many things are happening lately and I just realised that POP (Passing Out Parade) is only about 2 weeks away... Experiencing a range of emotions right now; both happiness and sorrow... Happy in the sense that I am about to complete BMT (Basic Military Training) and sad because I am going to be separated from my buddies... Gonna put in my best effort for marching and footdrills so that my parents can see me march smartly on the Parade Square on June 10:) Shucks, Harmoc concert on June 9 so its impossible for me to go... Comments from my platoon mates about NJ Harmoc always never fail to brighten up my day:) But I never tell them about myself though, except the fact that I was from Harmoc in NJ. Nothing more than that, because I value truthful and honest remarks...

All I wanna do is find my way into honour and glory=)

Well I guess the entry title says it all. Many tough decisions to be made, some in a week's time and some in a month's time. Both as a soldier and as a civilian.

As a civilian:

Got accepted for NTU Business and SMU Economics.
Difficult to make a choice, since NTU business school is no doubt the most established and experienced in Singapore and the region; while SMU school of economics boasts of providing an education modelled after top universities in the US. Furthermore, I am still waiting for a reply from NUS for Business. An additional choice may be available once I get accepted again and more headache too=X

As a soldier:

Signed up for pilot during Air Force recruitment talk and they asked me to sit for some computer test. Dun really understand why I am chosen instead of my other friends who are fitter than me. In addition there is also a Military Police (MP) interview next week, not sure how I got shortlisted when I never even express any interest in it before=S Sounds quite fun though, wonder if I will get to wear the police uniform, that would be extremely cool man...

Hmm guess I will need a few days to think it through... Sounds a bit random, but I have had the happiest dream in my life so far during last night... Cant really remember the details but I roughly get the whole picture... Though its realistically impossible for me to fulfil that wonderful dream, I am contented for being able to experience it... Sometimes I really like dreams because they can fill up the gaps which make reality incomplete... Maybe certain things can only exist and survive in dreams and not in reality... Sounds like some 'chim' theory, but it is actually very simple... I know I am not supposed to and shouldn't dream by this point of time but sometimes I really can't help it... There are some things you can't change instantly, it takes time, and for me it seems like an eternity... Sorry to my readers if you all dun understand what I am talking about, you all dun have to understand so dun worry... I just need to talk to someone or something (like this blog) to express how I feel and I dun wish to bother my friends with my unimportant concerns. I like blogging in this particular manner because I feel relieved and better after that (at least for the moment). College Day

Attended NJC 39th College Day as an award recipient yesterday... Maybe its because of army, I made the effort to reach NJ before 4.15pm in order to attend the briefing on time by taking a cab and only to realise that it didn't matter whether I was punctual or not=X The briefing was merely attendance taking and following the instructions written on the sheet of paper... Never mind about that anyway...

Saw some people I know but they couldn't recognise me. Do I really look different when I am botak? Perhaps so. I usually like to walk around the school premises whenever I get the chance to visit my former school, recalling past memories and savouring the sweet moments I have had in there. I felt something when I visited RVPS, I felt something when I went Cat High, but sadly I was emotionless when I walked around NJ. Maybe I did feel a bit different whenever I walked past LT3, where I used to conduct harmoc practices, but nothing more than that.

Still remembered what Liyan messaged me: Enjoy the moment of fame when you received the award on stage. To tell the truth, the medal and certificate mean nothing to me at all. I know that many years down the road some people will remember me or some will just simply forget me, but for those who do; I would like to be remembered NOT as the president who led the band to attain the Gold with Honours, but rather the one whom went through all the shit and did his best for everyone. If people remember me for my achievements, I would rather they forget me like how they forget to complete their Math tutorials.

Confinement's over!!! Woah it was pretty unbearable for me, cause its my first time I am away from home for such a long period of time... Days sure crawled slowly in Tekong...

Read Alvin's blog several minutes ago and I felt quite touched, I never knew I was considered part of his 'true friends' gang together with ade and shi jun... Yup I agree with his 'frequency theory', I find it easy to connect with people who possess the same thinking as me..

During my days in Tekong I missed alot of people, especially my family, buddies and harmoc ppl... I wasn't that upset over all the physical training and lack of personal freedom in there, in fact I enjoyed the morning runs cause it helped to freshen me up:)

Intriguing questions were raised and I thought I crapped my way through it, like how I bluffed my way through my PW=x But think that the judges were much more intelligent to be fooled by my 'interesting' answers argh... However I guess the highlight of the interview was the fierce debate between me and the other candidate over a subject which most young people are probably pretty apathetic about---Politics. Enjoyed this kind of intellectual exchange rather than senseless gossiping which only serve to poison relations along different individuals...

Finally there is time for me to blog again:)

Been pretty busy with all the open house, university applications and fruitful discussions with my friends... Went out with Brandon, Enrico and Vincent(Chan) yesterday to have dinner at a japanese restaurant in cineleisure, kudos to eric for sacrificing himself by having jap food after returning from japan=p Had a lot of fun talking about special characteristics of several faculties in universities lol.. Also about Eric's random history, Vincent's owning grades and how Brandon and I think alike in our university application:) Vincent went to Tiong Bahru Plaza to see a friend off afterwards so the remaining three of us took a stroll along Orchard Road before deciding to pay the arcade at dhoby ghaut a visit. A really good place to destress and forget your troubles for the time being... By that time I almost couldn't take it anymore, cause I was already having fever that afternoon.. Luckily I appeared healthy enough to avoid detection from my parents when I told them I was going out:) We seldom get the chance to meet up so of course die die also must go haha! But seriously I was in a confused state when I got home, could hear myself calling out names throughout the night.. Can't remember what I said and dun bother trying to recall lol.. I felt as though my whole body was on fire, quite sure my temperature reached 40 degrees at some point of the time=X

However I was slightly better when I woke up this morning:) Went to NJ to settle some admin stuff and saw several of my juniors: Kim Yong, Wee Siang and Keng Yi... Only talked to them for a short while due to time constraint.. Felt the school was abit empty but later got to know from the canteen drink stall auntie that the school is having enrichment week now.. Met up with Vincent(Lim) after we were done with our stuff at Orchard to have a meal together.. Oh my he made army life in NS sound so fun and exciting lol! And we applied for the same courses too haha:) Went shopping for clothes at Far East Plaza, hmm the prices at the shop are really not bad I must say.. It was then I realised how fat I have become=X Anyway we visited kino and read a NS comic thats really funny.. We both having dinner at home, so went back shortly after that..

Though I was down with an illness and busy with uni application for the past few days; I really enjoyed them cause I got the luxury of spending some quality time with my best friends.. Sometimes I am really scared of losing these friends just because we dun really get the chance to meet up during my two hectic years at NJ, but its good to know that they are always around you, especially when you need their company... A true friend is one who comforts you and helps you to think of possible solutions when you get lousy results and not one who merely throws a few words of sympathy and leaving you to suffer alone. A true friend is not one who will only be concerned about his or her fantastic grades and too busy to be bothered about those who had done badly. Alright guess I will need more rest now, so I shall stop here...

Sleepless Night

Shall blog about Harmoc Camp 08 which started yesterday and ended today. The J2s kindly invited the seniors back to watch our very own talentine, which was actually a mini competition in conjunction with their preparation for the upcoming concert in June at the Esplanade Recital Studio. Felt honoured to attend the concert as one of the judges and I was pleased by overall standard of the newcomers. Can sense that the juniors really put in a lot of hard work to deliver wonderful and entertaining performances:)

Night games were pretty fun too! I was assigned to become one of the station masters for nightwalk by Norman several minutes beforehand=X But luckily I managed to conduct the session quite well haha... Had TONS of fun attempting to scare my juniors with my secret weapon: Rubber Snake. Its pretty amazing how a mere harmless rubber snake can scare the living daylights out of some juniors; especially a few which I will not name (hint: the very tall guy) in order to avoid any further embarrassment to them:P

Played several card games and RISK with the juniors throughout the night... The RISK game was simply thrilling as many players compete with each other for the right to dominate this planet... Must really say that Wee Xiang, Jing Kai, Eugene and Yun Ting were great players and also an inexhaustible source of entertainment:D Watched Jay's 2007 Taipei Concert with Jing Kai, Alvin and Shi Rui after the RISK game... I must say Jay is very talented and his singing in live concerts has improved! Before I forget, thanks to Shi Rui for helping me to pass the two dollars to the J2 guys:)

That day is approaching, whether I like it or not. Seriously I dun think I am going to do well for it. Realised it was because I did not get my priorities right. In short, I just wasn't concentrating on the things which I was supposed to be focussing on. Even though I told myself many many many times that I must do the right things at the right time.. Used to think I use my head more than my heart, but I was terribly wrong... Anyway too late for any regrets now. Will just have to see what I can do to minimise the damage to my parents; cos I am the only son and my dad is eldest in the family... Can almost hear them saying things like:

Went to the arcade at AMK and played several games with my harmoc+cat high juniors=) They were Eugene, Kim Yong and Wei Xiang.. We went to watch "L-Change the World" afterwards.. The movie was not as exciting or thrilling as Death Note but I liked it because it had many different elements in it: Comedy, Action, Horror etc...

The way L babysit the kids was simply hilarious lol.. Several scenes in the movie were not meant for the faint-hearted.. Really too disgusting, I must say.. Poor Kim Yong was eating his bread when those pictures came out=X Well, the audience also got the chance to see the rather "physically-challenged" L pulling off some fantastic stunts like jumping onto a moving plane or stopping a moving plane from crashing into the control tower.. Overall a great movie:)

Had a nice chat with they all and they even asked me to go back on tuesday haha!! Can't wait to meet them and the rest of my juniors this tuesday haha:D

I am never considered a "camera" person. Be it taking or being taken, I have never expressed any particular interest in any of the above. Yet my new assignment requires me to take at least 50 photos per day in places which I regard as "No Man's Land".

The job was tougher than what I had imagined. Singapore can seem surprisingly big even though its actually no bigger than a tiny red dot on the world map. It's a test of determination and endurance; the determination to accomplish my task and the endurance to complete my journey. And I am proud to declare that I have improved in both aspects:)

Today was the record-breaking day; I took 97 photos of industrial buildings in Senoko, which is situated in the far north. Felt immensely tired but satisfied on my way home on the bus. Made a couple of new friends too, though not very familiar with them yet...

Hmm think that I am some kind of workaholic, must find something to do if not will get bored easily haha.. No wonder it is said that my horoscope (Capricorn) values career above everything else; I used to think otherwise but it seems like the prediction is coming true now lol=p
